RF Field Strength Signal Level Meter 100–1000 MHz + Antenna
RF Field Strength & Signal Level Meter | 100–1000 MHz
Accurately measure and compare RF signal strength across a wide frequency range with this compact, passive Field Strength / Signal Level Meter. Ideal for amateur radio operators, two-way radio technicians, and RF hobbyists who need a reliable, battery-free way to evaluate transmitter output and antenna performance — right in the palm of their hand.
Key Features
- Wide Frequency Coverage: Operates across 100–1000 MHz. The included antenna is optimized for 400–470 MHz; use a matched antenna for other frequency ranges to maximize sensitivity.
- High Sensitivity: Verified with an HP8921A radio test set — needle deflects from as low as -20 dBm input; full-scale at approximately -2 dBm (sensitivity varies by frequency).
- Adjustable Amplitude Knob: Fine-tune needle swing range to protect the meter movement and get accurate readings at any power level.
- Built-In Auto Damping: Automatic buffering function prevents needle damage from sudden high-power signal bursts.
- No Battery Required: Completely passive design — no power source needed, ever.
-
Testing Sensitivity by Power:
- 0.1W: effective range 0.1–1 m
- 2W / 5W: effective range 1–3 m
- 10W: effective range 2–5 m
- 50W: extended range
- Compact & Portable: Lightweight ABS construction in a clean white finish — easy to carry to the field or workbench.

How to Use
- Before testing, turn the Amplitude Adjustment knob fully to the left.
- Choose an antenna whose length corresponds to a 1/4-wavelength of your target frequency.
- Position your handheld two-way radio approximately 1 meter from the meter (do not place too close — an excessively strong signal may damage the movement).
- Press the radio's PTT button to transmit. The needle will deflect in proportion to signal strength.
- If the needle exceeds full scale, rotate the Amplitude Adjustment knob until the needle settles at a readable position.
Testing Antenna Maximum Gain Point
Connect your two-way radio to the antenna feeder cable and place this meter near the antenna under test. Align the polarization of the meter's antenna with the antenna being tested. Transmit across multiple frequency points and record the needle readings at each. The frequency producing the highest reading indicates the antenna's optimal resonant frequency band.
⚠ Important: This passive field strength meter is designed exclusively for testing two-way radios and RF transmitters. Do not use it to test remote controls or non-RF devices.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What frequency range does this RF field strength meter cover?
A: This signal level meter covers a wide range of 100–1000 MHz. The included antenna is optimized for 400–470 MHz. For best accuracy at other frequencies within the range, use a 1/4-wavelength antenna matched to your target frequency.
Q: Does this field strength meter need batteries to operate?
A: No — this is a fully passive device. It requires no battery or external power source. It detects and displays RF signal strength purely through the received electromagnetic field, making it ideal for quick, hassle-free field measurements.
Q: Can this meter be used to test remote controls or other RF devices?
A: No. This passive field strength meter is specifically designed for testing two-way radios and RF transmitters operating in the 100–1000 MHz range. It is not suitable for testing remote controls or devices outside this range.
Q: How do I protect the needle movement from damage during testing?
A: Always start with the Amplitude Adjustment knob turned fully to the left before testing. The built-in automatic damping (buffering) function also helps prevent sudden needle over-swing. Keep the transmitter at least 1 meter away from the meter to avoid overloading the movement with an excessively strong signal.
